Using Your Phone or iPad to Make a Quilt Label

The baby quilts are washed!

I used Poly-Fil Cotton Classic Batting for them. It's 100% unbleached organic cotton with a 1/4" loft. The instructions said that presoaking the batting would preshrink the batting by 2-3%. I opted not to presoak, because it sounded really boring.

Mr. Pins is here with the stats on the batting shrinkage during the washing and drying process.

(Nevermind the difference in the original sizes). I'm ruthless in the squaring process.)

I want to send them on their way properly labeled. The plan was to trace the wording I had printed on a sheet of paper onto white fabric. Then I would embroider the text by hand. I couldn't see the printed text through the white fabric very well when I went to trace it, so I grabbed my iPad, opened the Mail app, and hit the button to create a new email. Taadaa! Lightbox.

You can do this with your phone, too! I used an app called myLite to create the white screen on my iPhone.

Next, I placed the paper on top of the iPad.

Then, I put the fabric on top. I could very clearly see the text through the fabric.

Here's what it looks like on top of the iPhone screen.

Then you just trace away with a pencil. I'm definitely not the first person to think of using their iPad this way, since there is an iPad app called Traceable. The app has some cool features to be sure, but this worked well enough for me. The iPad screen sensed my touch through the fabric, but I didn't send any accidental emails.

I worry about the longevity of marker and printer ink, so this is my preferred method of label making. If you want to lose yourself for hours online, though, definitely google quilt labels. It's fun!

I hope everyone has a great weekend of crafting ahead of them! I'm linking up with Crazy Mom Quilts!

  4. Love this idea, LOL! Another reason why I need an iPad... definitly couldn't do this with the iPhone. Hubby says I don't really need the iPad, but I keep adding reason I do, LOL!
