Finished: Two Baby Quilts

Binding attached!

Ok, full disclosure, I finished hand sewing the binding on the back of the pink quilt last night, but I was hand sewing the binding on the blue quilt until about 3:30 this afternoon. I'm very pleased with the way it turned out. Here's a shot of the back corners as well.

It occurred to me I've never hand sewn binding to the back of a quilt before. I stayed up all night machine sewing binding to the first quilt I made ten years ago. When my mom woke up the next day, she wisely pulled out the stitching and hand sewed it for me. Then that queen sized Double Wedding Ring quilt was merrily gifted away. When I made a donation quilt this past fall, I machine sewed the binding to the back of the quilt by stitching in the ditch along the front of the quilt.

I'm so excited to give these quilts as gifts next weekend. They will belong to a little boy and girl who will be cousins.

You can tell that I used different shades of white for the background fabrics. The pink one is Kona white, and the blue one might be a Robert Kaufmann solid. In person, the Kona white is the whiter fabric.

I stitched in the ditch for the quilting, but I used different approaches to straight line quilting as you can see on the backs.

These made up pretty quickly with a combination of charm pack squares and some pieced blocks. The finished size is 53" x 36.5." It was great to get a whole quilt back out of a piece of fabric without having to piece the back. I hope to have a pattern out later this month! I'm thinking about using Craftsy's new pattern shop as an easy way of selling patterns with instant PDF downloads. Woohoo!

Happy weekend sewing!

  5. Oh my gosh! Ok well in order to save myself from sounding like a complete broken record, I should have just said on my last comments that EVERY SINGLE YOU MAKE is amazing. I am seriously dying over every single one of your quilts and your blog in general. The ombre look on this is incredible, I'm super impressed how perfectly well all of the different shades are. I'm not phrasing that well but hopefully you know what I meant. You are amazing Claire Jain! And I'm not just saying that, you seriously are SUPER super talented. You not only have a skill at doing the hand work so well but you have a really good eye for what looks well together. By the time I have babies, please have a shop open so I can buy a baby quilt from you. ha really though. Don't worry, I'm only 18 so you have a few years. ;)
